📖 Short Plot Summary

After his parents’ marriage falls apart, teenage Frank Abagnale Jr. runs away and discovers he has an extraordinary talent for pretending to be whoever people need him to be. He poses as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer while cashing fake checks across the country. FBI agent Carl Hanratty slowly becomes obsessed with catching him, but the chase turns into something stranger than a simple cop-and-con game: a lonely holiday phone call, a warped father-son bond, and a question of whether Frank can stop running before his lies finally swallow him whole.

💡 Trivia

Director

  • Catch Me If You Can was directed and produced by Steven Spielberg.
  • Before Spielberg directed it, several filmmakers were connected to the project, including David Fincher, Gore Verbinski, Lasse Hallström, Miloš Forman, and Cameron Crowe.
  • Spielberg gives the film a breezy, stylish tone while keeping Frank’s loneliness and family pain underneath the con-man fun.
  • The movie was released the same year as Spielberg’s Minority Report, making 2002 a very busy Spielberg year.

Cast / Casting

  • Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Frank Abagnale Jr., shifting between teenage vulnerability and expert-level confidence games.
  • Tom Hanks plays FBI agent Carl Hanratty, the buttoned-up investigator who becomes Frank’s reluctant anchor.
  • Christopher Walken earned an Oscar nomination and won a BAFTA for playing Frank Abagnale Sr.
  • Amy Adams plays Brenda Strong, one of Frank’s most important romantic connections.
  • Jennifer Garner appears in a small but memorable role as Cheryl Ann.

Soundtrack / Score

  • John Williams composed the film’s jazzy, playful score.
  • Williams received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.
  • The music leans into 1960s cool, with a cat-and-mouse energy that matches Frank and Carl’s chase.
  • The opening title sequence and score help set the movie’s retro caper tone before the story gets more emotionally complicated.

Location

  • The story moves across the United States and Europe as Frank changes identities and keeps running.
  • Filming took place across many locations, including Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Quebec City, Montreal, and Ontario International Airport.
  • Quebec City doubled for French locations, including Montrichard.
  • The production reportedly used a large number of locations in a compressed shooting schedule, helping the film feel like one long glamorous escape route.

Behind-The-Scenes

  • The screenplay was written by Jeff Nathanson.
  • The film was produced by Steven Spielberg and Walter F. Parkes.
  • DreamWorks Pictures released the film theatrically in the United States on December 25, 2002.

Nostalgia

  • Catch Me If You Can has major early-2000s prestige crowd-pleaser energy: Spielberg, DiCaprio, Hanks, Walken, John Williams, and a slick holiday release.
  • The movie’s Pan Am uniforms, check scams, retro hotels, and 1960s styling give it a bright caper-movie charm.
  • Frank’s cons are entertaining, but the movie keeps circling back to divorce, loneliness, and the fantasy of becoming someone else.
  • It remains one of Spielberg’s most rewatchable lighter films, even with the darker emotional stuff running through it.

Easter Eggs

  • The animated title sequence visually previews Frank’s shifting identities and Carl’s pursuit before the story begins.
  • The “two little mice” story becomes Frank Sr.’s philosophy of survival and one of the emotional keys to Frank Jr.’s behavior.
  • Frank’s repeated holiday calls to Carl reveal that the person chasing him may also be the only person he trusts enough to contact.
  • The film’s title works as both a dare and a cry for help: Frank wants to escape, but he also wants someone to care enough to catch him.
  • The real Frank Abagnale Jr. has a cameo as a French police officer who helps arrest the movie version of Frank.

Misc.

  • Catch Me If You Can is rated PG-13.
