Strong direction, sharp dialogue, memorable characters, and practical effects go a long way with Don. He pays attention to the editing and the choices behind the camera, especially when a movie expects the audience to do some thinking.
He also has time for dark humor, cult favorites, and ambitious weirdness. Jaws and GoodFellas both earned his full five stars. Rock of Ages and Nothing But Trouble had a considerably rougher evening.
