Short Plot Summary
Lloyd Dobler is a charming, directionless high school graduate with no real career plan beyond kickboxing and not becoming a sellout. Diane Court is the class valedictorian, sheltered by her father and preparing to leave for a prestigious fellowship in England. When Lloyd asks Diane out after graduation, their unlikely romance slowly breaks through her carefully controlled world. But as Diane’s father comes under investigation for tax fraud and her future pulls her away, Lloyd has to decide how much heartache he can take from the girl who gave him a pen.

Trivia
Director
- Say Anything... was written and directed by Cameron Crowe.
- The film was Crowe’s feature directorial debut after he had already written Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
- Crowe brings a softer, more emotionally observant approach to the teen-romance genre than many 1980s high school comedies.
- The movie helped establish Crowe’s signature interest in music, romance, earnest underdogs, and characters trying to say what they actually feel.
Cast / Casting
- John Cusack stars as Lloyd Dobler, one of his signature roles.
- Ione Skye plays Diane Court, the valedictorian who has to choose between a carefully planned future and an unexpected relationship.
- John Mahoney plays Diane’s father, James Court, giving the film a more serious emotional and moral conflict than a standard teen romance.
- Joan Cusack appears as Lloyd’s sister Constance, adding real-life sibling energy to their scenes.
- Early-career appearances include Jeremy Piven, Eric Stoltz, Bebe Neuwirth, and Pamela Adlon.
Soundtrack / Score
- Richard Gibbs and Anne Dudley are credited with the film’s music.
- Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” became permanently tied to the boombox scene.
- The Smithereens originally wrote “A Girl Like You” for the film, but it was ultimately not used in the movie.
- The soundtrack is a major part of the film’s identity, helping turn Lloyd’s grand romantic gesture into one of the most famous movie moments of the 1980s.
Location
- The story is set in Seattle, Washington.
- The movie was filmed primarily in Southern California, despite its Seattle setting.
- School, party, house, and neighborhood locations give the film a grounded suburban feel rather than a glossy fantasy-romance look.
- The film’s setting adds to the Pacific Northwest mood, even though much of the production took place elsewhere.
Behind-The-Scenes
- The film was produced by Polly Platt and executive produced by James L. Brooks.
- 20th Century Fox released the film theatrically in the United States on April 14, 1989.
- The reported production budget was approximately $16 million.
- Box office sources list the film’s gross at approximately $21.5 million.
- The boombox scene was reportedly difficult because John Cusack was hesitant about the gesture, feeling Lloyd might not actually do it that way.
Nostalgia
- Say Anything... is one of the defining late-1980s teen romances.
- The image of Lloyd Dobler holding a boombox over his head became one of the most parodied and referenced romantic images in movie history.
- Lloyd’s anti-career speech still hits for anyone who has ever been young, confused, and deeply suspicious of office culture.
- The film’s appeal comes from its mix of sweetness, awkwardness, heartbreak, music, and the terrifying summer between high school and whatever comes next.
Easter Eggs
- The title Say Anything... reflects Lloyd’s emotional openness and the film’s focus on people struggling to speak honestly.
- The boombox scene uses “In Your Eyes” not as dialogue, but as Lloyd saying what he cannot say out loud.
- Lloyd’s kickboxing obsession is funny because it is both his only plan and somehow the most honest thing about him.
- Diane’s pen becomes one of the film’s smallest but most painful symbols of mismatched emotional expectations.
- The airplane ending turns silence into suspense, making the seatbelt sign feel like a romantic fate detector.
Misc.
- Say Anything... is rated PG-13.
- The film runs 100 minutes.
- Rotten Tomatoes describes it as one of the definitive Generation X movies, mixing humor, heart, and John Cusack’s left-of-center appeal.
- Roger Ebert gave the film four stars and later included it in his Great Movies coverage.
- Your 3 Guys and a Flick ratings page lists Say Anything as Episode 51, with Don rating it 3.00, Ken rating it 3.50, Jon rating it 0.00, and an overall rating of 2.17.
