Short Plot Summary
Set in the Northern Great Plains in 1719, Prey follows Naru, a young Comanche woman determined to prove herself as a hunter. When she notices signs of a powerful creature stalking the land, most of her tribe dismisses the danger or assumes it is just another animal. But Naru realizes something far more advanced and deadly is hunting both people and predators for sport. Armed with observation, survival instincts, her dog Sarii, and a whole lot of “you picked the wrong Comanche warrior,” Naru turns the hunter into the hunted.

Trivia
Director
- Prey was directed by Dan Trachtenberg.
- The screenplay was written by Patrick Aison, from a story by Aison and Trachtenberg.
- The film is a prequel to Predator, moving the franchise from 1980s jungle warfare to the Northern Great Plains in 1719.
- Trachtenberg’s approach strips the franchise back to survival, tracking, tension, and one-on-one tactical problem solving.
- The film was praised for refreshing the Predator formula without over-explaining the mythology or turning the alien hunter into a CGI fireworks show with dreadlocks.
Cast / Casting
- Amber Midthunder stars as Naru, the Comanche hunter at the center of the story.
- Dakota Beavers plays Taabe, Naru’s brother and one of the tribe’s strongest hunters.
- Dane DiLiegro plays the Predator, sometimes called the Feral Predator, giving the creature a leaner, more animalistic physical presence.
- Michelle Thrush plays Aruka, Naru and Taabe’s mother.
- Bennett Taylor plays Raphael Adolini, a name that connects the film to wider Predator franchise lore.
- Sarii, Naru’s dog, became a major fan favorite and deserves every treat in the known galaxy.
Soundtrack / Score
- The score was composed by Sarah Schachner.
- Schachner’s music blends tension, action, atmosphere, and emotional themes tied to Naru’s journey.
- The score received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special.
- Native American musician Robert Mirabal contributed flute and vocals to the score.
- The film’s sparse dialogue puts extra weight on sound design, natural ambience, breath, movement, and score.
- The sound team won the Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special.
Location
- The film was shot in Alberta, Canada.
- Atlas of Wonders identifies Kananaskis Country, west of Calgary, as a filming area used for establishing shots.
- The production also filmed on Stoney Nakoda Nation ancestral land near Calgary.
- Additional Alberta-area locations included Moose Mountain and river / wilderness environments used to create the Great Plains setting.
- The natural landscapes are central to the film’s impact, turning open fields, forests, rivers, and tall grass into both hunting grounds and hiding places.
Behind-The-Scenes
- The film was produced by John Davis, Jhane Myers, and Marty Ewing.
- Jhane Myers, a member of the Comanche Nation and Blackfeet Nation, served as producer and helped guide cultural representation.
- Jeff Cutter served as cinematographer, and Angela M. Catanzaro and Claudia Castello edited the film.
- Hulu released the film in the United States on August 5, 2022.
- The cast completed physical training for weapons, movement, and survival-style action before and during production.
- The film includes a full Comanche-language dub performed by the cast, making it a landmark release for Indigenous-language representation in mainstream genre filmmaking.
Nostalgia
- Prey became one of the most acclaimed Predator entries since the 1987 original.
- The film brought the franchise back to the simple pleasure of one skilled human trying to outthink a technologically superior alien hunter.
- Naru’s underdog arc gives the movie a classic action-movie spine while still feeling different from the muscle-bound military energy of the original.
- The “if it bleeds” callback ties the film directly to the first Predator without making the whole movie a nostalgia checklist.
- For franchise fans, it proved there was still blood in the old Predator bones — and also that sometimes the best weapon is a really smart person everyone keeps underestimating.
Easter Eggs
- Raphael Adolini’s pistol connects to the flintlock pistol seen in Predator 2.
- The line “If it bleeds, we can kill it” directly echoes one of the most famous lines from the original Predator.
- The Predator’s older-looking technology reflects the film’s earlier timeline while still feeling connected to the franchise’s weapons and hunting culture.
- Naru’s hunting methods mirror the Predator’s tactics, creating a battle of observation, traps, patience, and adaptation.
- The animated end-credits artwork teases that the Predator story may not be over for Naru and her tribe.
