Trivia
Director
- Violent Night was directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola.
- Wirkola is also known for Dead Snow, Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
- The film combines Wirkola’s taste for splattery action with the stunt-driven style of 87North Productions.
- The movie treats Santa as both a burned-out holiday figure and an old warrior pulled back into battle.
Cast / Casting
- David Harbour stars as Santa Claus, giving the character a bruised, cynical, hard-drinking action-hero edge.
- John Leguizamo plays the villain Scrooge, the mercenary leader behind the Lightstone mansion invasion.
- Beverly D’Angelo plays Gertrude Lightstone, the ruthless family matriarch whose fortune becomes the robbers’ target.
- Leah Brady plays Trudy, the young girl whose belief in Santa becomes the emotional center of the movie.
- Alex Hassell and Alexis Louder play Trudy’s parents, Jason and Linda, whose strained relationship is tested during the hostage crisis.
Soundtrack / Score
- Dominic Lewis composed the film’s score.
- The music blends Christmas textures with action-movie percussion, dark comedy, and sentimental holiday cues.
- Lewis received an International Film Music Critics Award nomination for Breakthrough Composer of the Year.
- The movie also uses familiar Christmas songs and carols in contrast with the bloody action onscreen.
Location
- The story takes place mainly at the Lightstone family mansion on Christmas Eve.
- Production used Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, as a filming location.
- The snowy estate setting gives the movie a classic Christmas atmosphere while also creating a contained action-movie battleground.
- The mansion layout supports the film’s mix of hostage thriller, home-invasion action, and holiday slapstick violence.
Behind-The-Scenes
- The screenplay was written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who also worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
- The film was produced by 87North’s Kelly McCormick, David Leitch, and Guy Danella.
- Universal Pictures released the film domestically on December 2, 2022.

Nostalgia
- Violent Night plays like a mash-up of Christmas movies, home-invasion thrillers, and 1980s/1990s action cinema.
- The movie clearly invites comparisons to Die Hard, with a Christmas setting, trapped hostages, armed thieves, and one unlikely hero inside the building.
- Trudy’s improvised traps give the film an especially bloody spin on Home Alone-style holiday mayhem.
- For fans, the movie quickly became part of the “is this a Christmas movie?” action-holiday conversation.
Easter Eggs
- The villain’s codename, Scrooge, directly ties the film to classic Christmas miser imagery.
- Other mercenary codenames, including Gingerbread, Krampus, and Candy Cane, turn holiday iconography into criminal branding.
- Santa’s weapon of choice, a sledgehammer, gives the film a pun-friendly Christmas-action identity.
- The “season’s beatings” marketing line sums up the movie’s central joke: Santa delivers punishment instead of presents.
- The movie’s use of walkie-talkies, vault schemes, hostage dynamics, and a lone hero in the building all echo classic action-thriller setups.
