💡 Trivia

Director

  • IT was directed by Andy Muschietti, who previously directed the horror film Mama.
  • Muschietti directed both IT and its 2019 sequel IT: Chapter Two.
  • The 2017 film focuses on the childhood section of Stephen King’s story, moving the kids’ timeline from the 1950s to the late 1980s.
  • The movie blends coming-of-age adventure with supernatural horror, giving the Losers Club as much focus as Pennywise.

Cast / Casting

  • Bill Skarsgård plays Pennywise, taking on the role previously made famous by Tim Curry in the 1990 miniseries.
  • Jaeden Martell, credited at the time as Jaeden Lieberher, plays Bill Denbrough.
  • Finn Wolfhard plays Richie Tozier shortly after breaking out on Stranger Things.
  • Sophia Lillis’ performance as Beverly Marsh became one of the film’s most praised elements.
  • The young cast’s chemistry helped turn the Losers Club into the emotional center of the film.

Soundtrack / Score

  • Benjamin Wallfisch composed the film’s score.
  • The score mixes childhood melancholy, eerie music-box textures, and aggressive horror cues for Pennywise’s attacks.
  • The film also uses period music to anchor the story in its late-1980s setting.
  • Wallfisch returned to score IT: Chapter Two, connecting both films musically.

Location

  • The story is set in Derry, Maine, Stephen King’s fictional town used in several of his works.
  • Production took place in Ontario, Canada.
  • Port Hope, Ontario, stood in for Derry in several exterior scenes.
  • Other filming locations included Toronto and the surrounding Ontario area.

Behind-The-Scenes

  • The screenplay was written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman.
  • New Line Cinema, KatzSmith Productions, Vertigo Entertainment, and Lin Pictures were among the production companies involved.
  • Warner Bros. Pictures released the film domestically on September 8, 2017.
  • Box Office Mojo lists the production budget at approximately $35 million.
  • The film opened to more than $123 million domestically, setting a major opening-weekend record for horror at the time.

Nostalgia

  • The film updates King’s original childhood timeline to the 1980s, leaning into bikes, arcades, summer freedom, and analog horror vibes.
  • Its mix of kid friendship and small-town terror helped it appeal to fans of both Stephen King and coming-of-age adventure stories.
  • Pennywise’s red balloon imagery became instantly recognizable again for a new generation.
  • The movie revived mainstream interest in theatrical Stephen King horror adaptations and helped launch a wave of renewed King projects.

Easter Eggs

  • The Losers Club dynamic directly echoes the bond at the center of Stephen King’s novel.
  • The 27-year cycle is key to Pennywise’s mythology and also became a clever real-world talking point because the film arrived 27 years after the 1990 miniseries.
  • The Derry missing-child posters and background details build the sense that the town’s horror has been repeating for generations.
  • The Neibolt House works as a central haunted-house location that gathers several of the kids’ fears into one place.
  • The ending sets up the adult storyline adapted in IT: Chapter Two.

Misc.

  • IT is rated R for violence/horror, bloody images, and language.
  • Rotten Tomatoes summarizes the film as a well-acted, fiendishly frightening adaptation with an emotionally affecting story at its core.
