Short Plot Summary
When twelve alien spacecraft appear around the world, linguist Louise Banks is recruited by the U.S. military to help communicate with the beings inside. Working with physicist Ian Donnelly, Louise begins deciphering the aliens’ circular written language while global fear pushes nations toward conflict. As she learns more, Louise experiences memories and visions that seem connected to her daughter, Hannah. The mystery of the alien language reveals a profound truth about time, choice, grief, and whether knowing the future would change the way we live it.
