  • Casting

    • Vernon Wells was the first choice to be cast as Captain Bennett, mostly because of his role in Mad Max 2 (1981). Mark L. Lester stated that Wells was “the only one that could have played against him [Schwarzenegger]”. He further added Bennett was “in love with Matrix but he hated him, too. He wanted to kill him but he was in love with him
    • Rae Dawn Chong nailed her audition and was given this role on the spot. She took it, saying, “I knew Arnold would make the film a hit, and I wanted to be part of that.”
    • Vernon Wells wasn’t the original actor cast to play Bennett. He did audition for the role and lost to Wings Hauser. On the first day of filming, however, director Mark L. Lester fired Hauser and hired Wells. This is the reason that Bennett’s clothes seem so tight, because Wells was bigger than Hauser, and the production didn’t have time to make a new costume.
    • It was rumored Vernon Wells got the part of Bennett because of his performance as Wez in The Road Warrior (1981).
  • Trivia

    • According to Alyssa Milano, Arnold Schwarzenegger was very protective of her on set. “He even helped with my algebra homework.”

    • Vernon Wells described his look as “Freddie Mercury on steroids”.

    • The shopping mall (Sherman Oaks Galleria) used is the same one that was used in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), also starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since both films wrapped, the mall has been remodeled.

    • Rae Dawn Chong’s reactions to the motel fight were filmed separately and were completely ad-libbed.

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger & Rae Dawn Chong shot a love scene, but it was deemed unconvincing and was dropped from the movie.

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger performed many of his own stunts, as producers found it difficult to find a stunt double for the bodybuilder. The actor suffered a dislocated shoulder and several stitches during the shoot.

    • The mansion used in the final shootout between Matrix and Arius (the former Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills) is the same mansion seen in the final shootout between Axel Foley and Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop (1984). Coincidentally, both Matrix and Foley were trying to rescue somebody named Jenny in that mansion in their respective films.

    • John McTiernan was offered the chance to direct this film, and turned it down. Later, while editing Nomads (1986), his feature debut, he was offered the chance to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger’s second film for 20th Century Fox, Predator (1987), which he accepted. He also directed Arnie in Last Action Hero (1993).

    • After filming one scene, Arnold Schwarzenegger told Mark L. Lester to never give Vernon Wells a real knife.

    • The shot of Matrix standing on the landing gear of the plane as it races down the runway was shot by constructing the wheel section of a plane and attaching it by hydraulics to the side of a camera truck.

    • This film came out the same year as the similarly-themed Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), starring Sylvester Stallone. Both films performed well at the box office, although Stallone’s film was a much bigger hit and cultural/global phenomenon. The fact that Stallone and Schwarzenegger had competing films out in the same year fueled the “Stallone vs. Schwarzenegger” rivalry that went on for years, both with each other and in the media.

    • The cut on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s forehead in the beginning of the movie was real.

    • The introduction to Matrix as he comes out of the forest, with close ups on his boots, chest, biceps etc was shot and edited in a similar fashion as Leni Riefenstahl’s Nazi propaganda movies. According to director Mark L. Lester this was done to represent the notion of the invincible man of the earth emerging from the forest.

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger stabbed himself with a knife and had to get stitches.

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger was transported to the hospital three times during the filming as he was performing many of his own stunts.

    • In three alternate takes of Bennett’s death scene, Matrix says different lines: “I hate small talk!”; “I think it was too much pressure for you, Bennett.” and “Couldn’t take the pressure, Bennett?”

    • Originally, the studio execs didn’t want Arnold Schwarzenegger to talk at all in the movie. This would have been a real loss, as Arnold’s hilarious one-liners would have been sorely missed.

    • Filming began on 4/22/85 and wrapped on 6/6/85 after 1 month, 6 weeks, or 45 days of filming.

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger received a $2,000,000 salary for this film. This comes out to $5,472,118.96 in 2022 adjusted for inflation.

    • The $100,000 that Bennett says he was originally offered comes out to $273,605.95 in 2022.

    • At the beginning during the attack in his house, Matrix runs to the shed to get his gun. He punches in a security code to open the door. The code is 1 3 3, which is also the emergency number to call the police in Austria (Arnold’s native Home)

    • A scene that was filmed, but cut, sees General Kirby arrive at the shopping mall following Matrix’s rampage and tells the investigating police officer to reconsider going after Matrix. He warns the officer that Matrix was trained not to surrender and not go down without a fight and that the police force cannot stop him. The scene was included in the Director’s Cut special features.

    • The knives used by Matrix and Bennett in the fight at the end of the film were custom made for the movie by Texas knife expert Jack Crain.

    • This is the second of three films in which Bill Paxton and Arnold Schwarzenegger worked together, the other two being The Terminator (1984) and True Lies (1994).

    • Screenwriter Jeph Loeb originally wrote the script with the intention of having Gene Simmons play Matrix, but Simmons passed on it early in the developmental stage. Loeb then rewrote the script with Nick Nolte in mind as an out-of-condition former Commando. The storyline was to concern a special forces agent working in the Middle East who becomes sick of the continuous death and destruction. He leaves Israel, returns to the United States

    • The little red car that Cindy owns, and Arnie just about wrecks in the car chase scene, is a Sunbeam Alpine, a 1960s British sports car.

    • The film is inspired by DC Comics character Sgt. Rock, which star Arnold Schwarzenegger and producer Joel Silver had long attempted to make into a movie. Screenwriter Jeph Loeb had written for comics and gave Sgt. Rock’s first name (Franklin) to General Kirby, and his middle name (John) to Matrix.

      • Jeph Loeb is a Peabody Award-winning and two-time Emmy Nominated Writer/Producer. His television credits include Jessica Jones (2015), Luke Cage (2016), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013) and Legion (2017), as well as Lost (2004) and Smallville (2001). His career started with writing and producing the films Teen Wolf (1985) and Commando (1985). His graphic novels Batman: The Long Halloween and Superman for All Seasons have been cited as influences on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Smallville and Gotham.

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to do the movie because he wasn’t playing a caveman nor a robot and wouldn’t be walking around with no clothes on and that he would be playing a normal person.

    • Vernon Wells briefly reprises his role for Bennet (named Barrett) in the spoof movie No Chance (2020), 35 years after the original movie’s release.

Quotes

Sully: [20:34] Here, have some beers in Val Verde, Matrix. It'll give everyone a little more time with your daughter.

[Henriques laughs]

John Matrix: You're a funny guy Sully, I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last.

John Matrix: [40:43] Where is she, Sully?

Sully: Kiss my ass!

John Matrix: I can't hear you!

Sully: I'll say it a little louder, get fucked!

John Matrix: [holds Sully upside-down over a cliff by his leg] Listen, loyalty is very touching. But it is not the most important thing in your life right now! But what IS important is gravity! I have to remind you Sully, this is my weak arm!

Sully: You can't kill me Matrix! You need me to find your daughter!

John Matrix: Where is she?

Sully: I don't know. But Cooke knows, I'll take you to where I'm supposed to meet him!

John Matrix: But you won't.

Sully: Why not?

John Matrix: [holds the hotel key he stole from Sully that Cooke is staying at] Because I already know. Remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last?

Sully: That's right, Matrix! You did!

John Matrix: I lied.

[Matrix releases Sully, who falls to his demise]

Cindy: What did you do with Sully?

John Matrix: I let him go

Cooke: [46:43] You scared, motherfucker? Well, you should be, because this Green Beret is going to kick your big ass!

John Matrix: I eat Green Berets for breakfast. And right now, I'm very hungry!

Cindy: [hiding under a table] I can't believe this macho bullshit...

[Matrix has thrown a pipe through Bennett]

John Matrix: Let off some steam, Bennett.

John Matrix: [22:44]

[after killing Henriques in the plane]

John Matrix: Don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired.

Bennett: [1:20:25]

[after he shot Matrix]

Bennett: John! How's your arm John?

John Matrix: [hidden behind a wall] Come over and find out!

Bennett: No thanks, I think I'll take a pass. John, stick your head out, one shot, right between the eyes, I'll make it quick, just for old time sake.

John Matrix: Bennett, stop screwing around and let the girl go, it's me that you want, I only have one arm, you can beat me!

[Bennett laughs]

John Matrix: [Comes out from hidden place] Come on Bennett, throw away the chicken shit gun, you don't just want to pull the trigger, you want to put the knife in me, and look me in the eye, and see what's going on in there when you turn it, that's what you want to do, right?

Bennett: I can kill you John!

John Matrix: Come on, let the girl go, just between you and me, don't deprive yourself of some pleasure, come on Bennett, let's party!

Bennett: I can beat you, I don't need the girl.

[laughs]

Bennett: I DON'T NEED THE GIRL!

[throws Jenny away]

Bennett: I don't need the gun John. I can beat you. I DON'T NEED NO GUN!

[Pulls out his knife]

Bennett: And I'll KILL YOU NOW!

Cindy: [38:15] You steal my car, you rip the seat out, you kidnap me, you ask me to help you find your daughter which I very kindly do, and then you get me involved in a shoot out where people are dying and there's blood spurting all over the place, and then I watch you rip a phone booth out of a wall, swing from the ceiling like Tarzan, and then there's a cop that's going to shoot you and I save you and they start chasing me! Are you going to tell me what's going on or what?

John Matrix: No.

[Cooke aims a gun at Matrix]

Cooke: [47:13] Fuck you, asshole!

[Cooke squeezes the trigger, but the gun clicks empty]

John Matrix: Fuck *you*, asshole.

Cindy: [30:43] Can you tell me what this is all about?

John Matrix: Yeah, a guy I trusted for years wants me dead.

Cindy: That's understandable. I've only known you for five minutes and I want you dead, too.

John Matrix: [1:05:57] Don't break radio silence until they see me.

Cindy: How will I know?

John Matrix: Because all fucking hell is going to break loose.

John Matrix: [7:47]

[reading about Boy George in a pop magazine]

John Matrix: Why don't they just call him Girl George? It would cut down on the confusion.

Jenny Matrix: Oh, Dad, that is so old.

John Matrix: Ha Ha. You know when I was a boy and rock'n'roll came to East Germany, the communists said it was subversive.

[thinks and smiles]

John Matrix: Maybe they were right.

Major General Franklin Kirby: Leave anything for us?

John Matrix: Just bodies.

Diaz: [13:34] Mellow out man. We can't talk business with you waving guns in people's faces. Your daughter is safe, Colonel. Whether she stays that way is up to you. My people, they got some business with you. And if you want your kid back, then you gotta cooperate, right?

John Matrix: Wrong.

[shoots Diaz between the eyes]

Cindy: [41:29] You don't even have a car.

[Matrix pushes Sully's overturned car back upright]

John Matrix: Now I do.

Arius: [26:17] Your father appears to be cooperating. You will be back with him soon. Won't that be nice?

Jenny Matrix: Not as nearly as nice as watching him smash your face in.

Jenny Matrix: [from the Director's Cut] Not nearly as nice as watching him kick your ass

Western Flight Attendant: [21:27] Any carry-on luggage?

John Matrix: [pointing to Henriques] Just him.

Henriques: [to Matrix] Open your mouth again and I'll nail it shut.

Bennett: [19:29] Sully'll make sure you get on the plane, Henriques'll stay with you, make sure you get off. I don't hear from either one of 'em, she's dead.

John Matrix: How much are they paying you, Bennett?

Bennett: They offered me a hundred grand. You wanna know something? When I found out I could get my hands on you, I said I'd do it for nothing.

Henriques: Hey, hold it!

[Henriques and Sully grabs Matrix]

John Matrix: I'll be back, Bennett!

Bennett: John... I'll be ready, John.

Biggs: [34:42] Attention all units, emergency on theater level, suspect six foot two, brown hair. He's one gigantic motherfucker!

Young Guerrilla: [1:03:23] Slitting a little girl's throat is like cutting warm butter.

Bennett: Put the knife away and shut your mouth. I really love listening to your little piss-ant soldiers trying to talk tough. They make me laugh. If Matrix was here, he'd laugh too.

Arius: Mr. Bennett, my soldiers are patriots.

Bennett: Your soldiers are nothing. Matrix and I can kill every single one of them...

[snaps his fingers]

Bennett: In the blink of an eye. Remember that

Arius: Are you trying to... frighten me?

Bennett: I don't have to try. When Matrix finishes the job, he'll be back for his daughter. Now whether she's alive or dead doesn't matter. Then he'll be after you. Now the only thing between you and Matrix is me

Arius: It is YOU that is afraid, Mr. Bennett. YOU are afraid of Matrix.

Bennett: Of course. I'm smart. But I have an edge; I have his daughter.

Bennett: John, I'm not going to shoot you between the eyes. I'm going to shoot you between the balls.

Bennett: [On his way to kill Jenny Matrix, and seeing explosions outside] Welcome back John! So glad you can make it!

[Plane will not start]

John Matrix: [1:00:40] Come on, you piece of shit! Fly or DIE!

[bangs on console and the plane starts up]

John Matrix: Works every time.

Cooke: [46:01] Where's Sully?

Cindy: In the shower.

Cooke: Who are you?

Cindy: Room service.

John Matrix: [49:01] We'll take Cooke's car. He won't be needing it.

Lawson: [1:53] I was afraid you'd miss me.

Cooke: Dont worry, we won't.

[Cooke and Diaz execute Lawson]

Sully: [28:46] You know I've got something I'd really like to give you.

Cindy: I'm not interested!

Sully: Ahh, you don't know what you're missing

Cindy: Well from here it looks like a nightmare, will you please leave me alone?

Sully: You fuckin' whore!

Cindy: [53:25] Where are we going?

John Matrix: Shopping.

Cindy: Shopping?

Bennett: John, I feel good. Just like old times. What's it feel like to be a dying man? You're a dead man, John!

John Matrix: Bullshit!

[Cindy uses a rocket launcher]

John Matrix: [57:51] Where did you learn how to do that?

Cindy: I read the instructions.

Major General Franklin Kirby: [1:01:37] Call the Federal Building. Have them monitor every police, aviation, & marine channel in the area

Soldier: What are you expecting?

Major General Franklin Kirby: World War 3.

John Matrix: [1:00:01] What's wrong?

Cindy: This isn't a plane, this is a canoe with wings!

John Matrix: Well then, get in and start paddling!

John Matrix: [16:15] Bennett! I thought you were...

Bennett: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of your unit, I've waited to pay you back.

Bennett: Do you know what today is Matrix? Pay day!

[Matrix declines an offer to resume his unit]

John Matrix: This was the last time.

Major General Franklin Kirby: Until a next time.

[pause]

John Matrix: No chance.

John Matrix: [12:25] Keep an eye out, they'll be coming. You're downwind, the air currents might tip them off

Jackson: Downwind?

[looks at Matrix like he's crazy]

Jackson: You think I could smell them coming?

John Matrix: I did.

Cindy: [47:23] These guys eat too much red meat!

Sully: [34:52] This place used to be good for hunting slash. It's gotten a little crowded, now. I think I found something, though.

John Matrix: [16:15] Bennett, I thought you were...

Bennett: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've waited to pay you back. You know what today is, Matrix?

[Matrix doesn't say anything, he just stares at Bennett with a surprised look on his face]

Bennett: Pay day.

[Bennett fires a tranquilizer into Matrix's stomach. Matrix passes out almost instantly]

[John Matrix, fully restrained in chains, comes out of sedation from being tranquilized. Bennett, Sully, Henriques, and despotic former dictator Arius are staring down at him]

Bennett: [16:55] Tranquilizers.

[lunges at him menacingly]

Bennett: I wanted to use the real THING!

John Matrix: Where's Jenny?

[to his shock, John sees Arius]

Arius: [Hispanic voice] You remember me, Colonel?

John Matrix: I remember you, scumbag! Especially the people you've tortured and killed!

Arius: Colonel Matrix, you do not understand a country like Val Verde. It is a country that needs a president who has an understanding of discipline.

John Matrix: Why tell me?

Arius: Because you're going to return to Val Verde and you are going to kill the president that you helped to overthrow me.

John Matrix: Why don't you have Bennett do it? Sounds like something he would get off on.

Arius: Because President Velasquez trusts you, Colonel. After all, he made you the hero of the revolution. Why, Captain Bennett left, shall we say, uh, under a cloud. Yes?

John Matrix: Yeah, 'cause he enjoyed killing a little TOO much.

Bennett: Your training, Matrix.

Arius: You can get close to President Velasquez. You will kill him. You know, Colonel, we went to a lot of trouble to find you.We had to pretend Captain Bennett's death so that General Kirby would become agitated and lead us to you, and now that I have you, you will do exactly as I tell you.

John Matrix: Fuck you.

[Bennett walks to the door panel. Sully twist John's head to the left. Bennett opens the door and John sees Cooke, one of Arius' henchmen, rolling out Jenny, tied up and restrained in a chair]

Jenny Matrix: [muffles in tears] Daddy!

John Matrix: [shocked] Jenny!

[Sully and Cooke draw their guns whilst Bennett puts his knife right to Jenny's neck]

John Matrix: Oh, you bastards!

Arius: Colonel Matrix, if you kill President Velasquez, I will send her back to you. If you try anything else, I will mail her to you in pieces.

[while talking to a bunch of pretty ladies]

Biggs: [34:32] Wanna see me kick some ass?

Cooke: [2:52] You know what I like best?

Forrestal: What's that?

Cooke: The price.

[Cranks up the car and backs up]

Forrestal: Whoa! Wait a minute! You can't drive that car in here! Whoa! Whoa-...

[Cooke speeds up and runs over Forrestal]

Cindy: [59:31]

[after Matrix kills a soldier by bashing his head in]

Cindy: Did anybody ever tell you you have a lot of hostility?

Bennett: [1:11:42]

[on his way to kill Jenny Matrix, tries to open the door, and the knob fells off, Bennett smashes the door open]

Bennett: You little BITCH!

Bennett: [He enters the room, saw a hole in the wall] Errr... GOD!

Bennett: [He looks through the hole, saw Jenny fled, Bennett hurled his way through the wall to chase Jenny Matrix] Catch... YOUUUUU !

John Matrix: [42:57] All that matters to me now is Jenny.

Major General Franklin Kirby: [10:21] Jenny, I need to talk to your dad, OK?

Jenny Matrix: Yeah. Got a warrant?

Major General Franklin Kirby: [sarcastically] Very funny.

Major General Franklin Kirby: John, we've got a problem. Someone's killing your men.

John Matrix: You gave them new identities.

Major General Franklin Kirby: There must have been a leak. Lawson, Forrestal, Bennett... they've all been hit.

John Matrix: Who's doing it?

Major General Franklin Kirby: You've made enemies all over the world, John. It could have been the Syrians, the South Americans, the Russians, or a terrorist group. They're going to find you.

John Matrix: We were going to make a normal life here.

Major General Franklin Kirby: You will, I promise. I'm going to coordinate with the federal people. We'll nail those bastards before they get close to you.

John Matrix: [36:17]

[pulling Sully out of the telephone booth]

John Matrix: You son of a bitch!

Major General Franklin Kirby: [19:05] Any sign of Matrix?

Soldier: No, sir. Just those bodies. You think there's more, sir?

Major General Franklin Kirby: If he's still alive, I'd expect a lot more.

John Matrix: Come on, Bennett, throw away that chicken-shit gun. You don't just want to pull a trigger. Put the knife in me and look me in the eye and see what's going on in there when you turn it.

Arius: [17:02] Do you remember me, Colonel?

John Matrix: I remember you, scumbag! Especially the people you've tortured and killed!

Western Flight Attendant: [21:56] Ladies & gentlemen we are preparing for departure. Please make sure all your carry on luggage is stored in the overhead compartments and make sure your seat belts are fastened and extinguish all cigarettes. Once we reach our cruising altitude we're going to be serving our complimentary beverages and then a little later on our dinner. Shortly after that we'll be showing our feature film. Flight attendants are Susan and Lane and I'm Vicky.

Forrestal: [Salesman trying to sell a car]

[2:17]

Forrestal: Now that is American workmanship. You think the Japanese invented that? Bullshit! We did! Oh, we may have lost it for a while, but we got it back.

Cooke: I like Cadillacs.

Leslie: [1:07] What's that?

Lawson: It sounds like the garbageman.

Leslie: On a Tuesday?

Arius: [1:10:14]

[to Bennett, after finding out that Matrix has escaped]

Arius: He was not on the plane. Kill her.

[Bennett smirks menacingly and loads his gun]

Arius: [from the Director's Cut] Your father seemed to be cooperating. You will be together with him soon. Won't that be nice?

Jenny Matrix: [26:17] Not nearly as nice as watching him kick your ass.
