  • Released: November 9, 1984

    Director: Wes Craven

    Written By:  Wes Craven

Stars: John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Nick Corri, Johnny Depp, Robert Englund

    Plot:
The monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer seeks revenge by invading the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his untimely death.

    How did this movie do:
    Budget: $1.1 million
    Box office: $57 million

  • Origin of the Idea

  • Wes Craven first came up with the basic idea for the movie from a series of articles in the “Los Angeles Times” over a three-year period, about a group of Southeast Asian refugees from the Hmong tribe, several of whom died in the throes of horrific nightmares. The group had come to the U.S. to escape the murderous reign of Pol Pot, and within a year of arriving, three men had died all in similar situations, the young, otherwise healthy man would have a nightmare, then refuse to sleep for as long as he could. When he finally fell asleep from exhaustion, he awoke screaming, then died. Autopsy results revealed that they had not died from heart failure, but had simply died. It was this inability to find a cause of death that intrigued Craven so much. Medical authorities have since called the phenomenon Asian Death Syndrome, a variant of Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome (SUDS), and Brugada Syndrome.

  • Trivia

    • New Line Cinema was saved from bankruptcy by the success of the film, and was jokingly nicknamed “The House that Freddy Built”.

    • Heather Langenkamp’s boyfriend at the time of the shooting is credited for creating Freddy’s nursery rhyme.

    • Heather Langenkamp beat over two hundred actresses for the role of Nancy Thompson, among them Jennifer Grey, Demi Moore, Courteney Cox, Tracey Gold and Claudia Wells.

    • In the original script, Freddy was a child molester. However, the decision was made to change him into being a child murderer to avoid accusations of exploiting a series of child molestations in California around the time of production. He was re-written as a child molester in the 2010 remake starring Jackie Earle Haley.

    • The inspiration for the character of Freddy came from several sources in Wes Craven’s childhood. Fred Krueger was a schoolmate of his, with whom he had shared a paper route, and who had bullied him for several years. In The Last House on the Left (1972), Craven also used this experience as inspiration, calling the villain Krug. Freddy’s appearance (especially the dirty clothes and hat) was inspired by a hobo, whom Craven saw staring at him through his window one day when he was ten.
  • Body Count

    • Tina Gray – Slashed across chest w/ Finger knives

    • Rod Lane – Hanged w/ bed sheet in jail cell

    • Glen Lantz – Pulled into bed, turned into blood geyser

    • Marge Thompson: – Burned to death, descended into abyss

Quotes

Children: One, two, Freddy's coming for you. / Three, four, better lock your door. / Five, six, grab your crucifix. / Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. / Nine, ten, never sleep again.

Nancy Thompson: [to Glen] Whatever you do... don't fall asleep.

Nancy Thompson: Mother! What's with the bars?

Marge Thompson: Security.

Nancy Thompson: Security? Security from what?

Marge Thompson: Not from what - from whom. Come down to the cellar. You wanna know who Fred Krueger was? He was a filthy child murderer who killed at least 20 kids in the neighborhood... kids we all knew.

Nancy Thompson: Oh, Mom.

Marge Thompson: It drove us crazy when we didn't know who it was, but it was even worse after they caught him.

Nancy Thompson: Did they put him away?

Marge Thompson: Well, all the lawyers got fat and the judge got famous, but someone forgot to sign the search warrant in the right place and Krueger was free just like that.

Nancy Thompson: What did you do?

Marge Thompson: A bunch of us parents got together and tracked him down. We found him in old abandoned boiler room, where he used to take his kids.

Nancy Thompson: Go on.

Marge Thompson: We took gasoline and poured it all around the place and made a trail of it out the door. We lit the whole thing up and watched it burn. He's dead now. He's dead because Mommy killed him.

[reveals Freddy's glove]

Marge Thompson: I even took his knives.

[Marge touches Nancy on her knee]

Nancy Thompson: You can sleep.

Fred Krueger: I'm your boyfriend now, Nancy.

Glen Lantz: Miss Nude America is going to be on tonight.

Mrs. Lantz: How can you hear what she's going to say?

Glen Lantz: Who cares what she says?

Nancy Thompson: [looking in a mirror] Oh, God. I look 20 years old!

Marge Thompson: Nancy?

Nancy Thompson: What, Mother?

Marge Thompson: Don't fall asleep in there. You could drown, you know.

Nancy Thompson: Oh, for Pete's sakes.

Marge Thompson: It happens all the time. I've heated up some warm milk for you, honey.

Nancy Thompson: Warm milk? Gross.

[Tina is in the alley behind her home when a trashcan lid suddenly comes rolling out and crashes at her feet. She turns around]

Fred Krueger: Tina...

Tina Gray: Shit.

[Freddy laughs mockingly as he appears, extending his arms across the entire width of the alley]

Tina Gray: Please, God!

Fred Krueger: [reveals his glove] This... is God!

Nancy Thompson: It's only a dream!

Fred Krueger: Come to Freddy.

Nancy Thompson: Goddamn you!

Nancy Thompson: Help! I've got him! Hey, Daddy! I've got him trapped! Help! Where are you?

Sgt. Parker: Everything's gonna be all right! Everything's under control!

Nancy Thompson: Get my dad, you asshole!

Hall Guard: Where's your pass?

Nancy Thompson: Screw your pass.

Fred Krueger: [approaching Nancy] I'll kill you slow!

Nancy Thompson: [after Glen failed to wake her up as she fell asleep and dreamed about Freddy] Glen, you bastard!

Glen Lantz: What did I do?

Nancy Thompson: I just asked you to do one thing, to stay awake and watch me and to wake me up if it looked like I was having a bad dream, and what did you do, you shit?

[Nancy slaps him on the knee]

Nancy Thompson: You fell asleep!

Marge Thompson: Nancy, you are going to get some sleep tonight if it kills me.

Nancy Thompson: Come on, Freddy. Can't you catch me?

Fred Krueger: I'm going to split you in two.

[Freddy wears Tina mask]

Tina Gray: Nancy, help me, please. Save me from...

[removes mask]

Fred Krueger: Freddy!

[Glen is trying to get to sleep on the couch alone, but the sounds of Tina and Rod having sex is keeping him up]

Glen Lantz: Morality sucks.

Voice on Glen's television set: It is now twelve midnight and this is station KRGR leaving the air.

Nancy Thompson: I know you're there, Freddy.

Fred Krueger: You think you was gonna get away from me?

Nancy Thompson: I know you too well, Freddy.

Fred Krueger: Now you die.

Nancy Thompson: It's too late, Krueger. I know the secret now. This is just a dream. You're not alive. This whole thing is just a dream.

[she turns around and faces him]

Nancy Thompson: I want my mother and friends again.

Fred Krueger: You what?

Nancy Thompson: I take back every bit of energy I gave you. You're nothing. You're shit.

Nancy Thompson: I grab the guy in my dream. You see me struggling so you wake me up. We both come out, you whack the fucker and we got him.

Glen Lantz: Are you crazy? Hit him with what?

Nancy Thompson: You're the jock. You have a baseball bat or something.

Tina Gray: Nancy, you dreamed about the same creep I did.

Rod Lane: I had a hard-on this morning when I woke up, Tina... Had your name written all over it.

Tina Gray: There's four letters in my name, Rod. How can there be enough room on your joint for four letters?

[laughter]

Rod Lane: Hey, up yours with a twirling lawnmower!

Nancy Thompson: [on the phone, referring to Glen] Hi, Daddy. I know what happened.

Lt. Thompson: I haven't been upstairs yet.

Nancy Thompson: Yeah, but you know he's dead, right?

Lt. Thompson: Yeah, apparently he's dead.

Nancy Thompson: Listen, Daddy, I've got a proposition for you. Listen very carefully, please.

Lt. Thompson: Nancy.

Nancy Thompson: I'm going to go and get the guy who did it, and I want you to be there to arrest him when I bring him out. Okay?

Lt. Thompson: Just tell me who did it. I'll go get him, baby.

Nancy Thompson: Fred Krueger did it, Daddy, and only I can get him. It's my nightmare he comes to.

Cop #3: [after seeing the crime scene in Glen's room] What the *hell* did that, Lieutenant?

Lt. Thompson: I don't know. What's the coroner got to say?

Cop #3: He's been in the john pukin' since he saw it.

Hall Guard: Hey, Nancy...

[flashes Freddy's finger knives]

Hall Guard: No running in the hallway.

Glen Lantz: Oh, man. Midnight, baseball bats and boogeymen. Beautiful.

Cop: You won't need a stretcher up there, you need a mop.

Nancy Thompson: [to Glen] I'm into survival.

Tina's Mom: You okay, Tina?

Tina Gray: Just a dream, Ma'.

Tina's Mom: Hm, some dream judging from that.

[Tina looks down to see that there are four tears in her night-gown]

Rod Lane: [after tackling Glen on the lawn] It's Rod Lane, bringing Lantz down, just three yards from the goal line! What a brilliant tackle and the crowd goes wild!

Tina Gray: What the hell are you doing here?

Rod Lane: Came to make up. No big deal. Your mom home?

Tina Gray: Of course.

[looking at the tool Rod used to make the screeching noise]

Tina Gray: Oh, what's that?

Rod Lane: Intense, huh?

[slowly reveals it and imitates a screeching noise]

Rod Lane: So what's going on here? An orgy or somethin'?

Glen Lantz: Maybe your funeral, dickhead.

[Rod pulls out a switchblade and holds it up to Glen's face]

Nancy Thompson: [closing Rod's switchblade and returning it] It's just a sleepover, Rod. Tina and me. Glen was just leaving.

Rod Lane: [to Tina, smirking] Did you see his face?

Glen Lantz: [mimicking Rod] "Did you see his face?"

Nancy Thompson: [she notices Glen standing outside her window with mud-caked soles] Sometimes I wish you didn't live right across the street.

Glen Lantz: [holds one of his muddy feet up to her] Will you shut up and let me in? Did you ever stand on a rose trellis in your bare feet?

Nancy Thompson: [referring to the Balinese way of dreaming] But what if they meet a monster in their dreams? Then what?

Glen Lantz: They turn their back on it. Take away its energy and it disappears.

Nancy Thompson: But what happens if they don't do that?

Glen Lantz: Well, I guess those people don't wake up to tell what happens.

Nancy Thompson: [looking in the mirror] This is just a dream, this isn't real. This is just a dream, he isn't real. He isn't...

[Freddy smashes through the mirror and grabs her]

[first lines]

Fred Krueger: Tina.

Glen Lantz: What did you do to your arm?

Nancy Thompson: I burned it in English class.

Lt. Thompson: [about Nancy] What was she doing there?

Marge Thompson: Hello to you, too, Donald.

Lt. Thompson: [returning greeting sarcastically] Marge.

Nancy Thompson: [at the police station] You know Tina, she dreamed this was gonna happen.

Lt. Thompson: What?

Nancy Thompson: She had a nightmare that someone was trying to kill her.

[to her mother, sobbing]

Nancy Thompson: That's why we were there, Mom. She just didn't wanna sleep alone.

Nancy Thompson: What I learned in the dream clinic. That's what I'm trying to prove, Mother. Rod didn't kill Tina and he didn't hang himself. There's this guy; he's after us in our dreams.

Marge Thompson: But that's just not reality, Nancy.

Nancy Thompson: [pulling Krueger's hat out of a drawer] It's real, Momma. Feel it.

Marge Thompson: Give me that damn thing!

Nancy Thompson: It even has his name written in it. Fred Krueger, Mom. Fred Krueger.

[realizing her mother knows about him]

Nancy Thompson: Do you know who that is, Mother? Because if you do you better tell me 'cause he's after me now.

Tina's Mom: [upon seeing Tina's torn nightgown] Tina, you either gotta cut your fingernails or ya gotta stop that kind of dreaming. One or the other.

Nancy Thompson: [screaming in the boiler room] Come out and show yourself, you bastard!

[she glances at her watch; Krueger comes from behind]

Nancy Thompson: [screams and jumps from the boiler room, landing in front of her house on a rose bush] Dammit! Where are you? Where are you, Krueger?

[laughs uncomfortably]

Nancy Thompson: I know you're here!

Fred Krueger: [whispering] Hey, Nancy.

[pops out from under the rose bush]

Nancy Thompson: [jumps towards him and grabs him] I've got you now!

[wrestles with him as her alarm wakes her up]

Nancy Thompson: [screams and realizes she's alone in the room] Oh... I'm crazy after all!

[Freddy pops out from the other side of her bed]

Nancy Thompson: [at the sleep clinic] I don't see why you can't just give me a pill to keep me from dreaming.

Dr. King: Everybody's got to dream, young girl. If you don't dream...

[pointing to his head]

Dr. King: You go.

Dr. King: [at the sleep clinic, referring to the monitor's brainwave display] A nightmare now would be plus or minus five or six. She's about three.

Marge Thompson: [Nancy begins twitching; Freddy's knives are heard] Doctor, what's she doing now? Is she asleep or awake?

[the monitor's number quickly increases to 30]

Dr. King: Something's wrong. It never gets this high.

Nancy Thompson: The killer's still loose, you know.

Lt. Thompson: You're saying somebody else killed Tina? Who?

Nancy Thompson: I don't know who he is, but he's burned and he wears a weird hat and a red and green sweater, really dirty. And he uses these knives, like giant fingernails...

Lt. Thompson: [cuts her off and guides her into the car, to Marge] You better keep her home for a few days, until she really gets over the shock of this.

Marge Thompson: I've got something better. I'm going to get her some help.

Marge Thompson: [to Nancy] Oh, I feel like a million bucks. They say you've bottomed out when you can't remember the night before.

Nancy Thompson: [before going to sleep to find Freddy] Okay, Krueger. We play in your court.

Nancy Thompson: Maybe I should just pick up that bottle and veg out with you, ignore everything going on around me by getting good and loaded.

[Marge slaps her]

Glen Lantz: We have reason to believe there may be something very strange going on.

Lt. Thompson: You got that right.

Nancy Thompson: What are you doing here?

Lt. Thompson: There's an unsolved murder and I hate unsolved murders, especially ones that my daughter is mixed up in. What are *you* doing here?

Nancy Thompson: Look, I just gotta see that he's okay.

Sgt. Garcia: I just checked on him ten minutes ago, he's sleeping like a baby. He's not going anywhere.

Glen Lantz: You believe this fog?

Nancy Thompson: Oh, I believe anything is possible.

Nancy Thompson: And now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. And if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Tina Gray: All day long I've been seeing that guy's weird face and hearing those fingernails.

Nancy Thompson: Fingernails? That's amazing you saying that. That made me remember the dream I had last night.

Tina Gray: What'd you dream?

Nancy Thompson: I dreamed about a guy in a dirty red and green sweater.

[Glen looks up, curious]

Tina Gray: Well, what about the fingernails?

Nancy Thompson: Well, he scraped his fingernails along things. Actually, they were more like finger-knives or something; something he'd made himself. They made a horrible sound...

[imitating nails on a chalkboard]

Nancy Thompson: Screeech.

Rod Lane: I probably could have saved her if I'd have moved sooner. But I thought it was just another nightmare, like the one I had the night before. There was... there was this guy; he had knives for fingers.

Nancy Thompson: Okay, here's what we're going to do.

Glen Lantz: It's dark in here.

Nancy Thompson: But it's not what you're thinking.

Tina Gray: [to Nancy] Maybe we're gonna have a big earthquake. They say things get really weird just before.

Rod Lane: [to Tina] Guys can have nightmares too, ya know. Ya ain't got a corner on the market or somethin'.

Nancy Thompson: Glen? Where are you? Are you there?

Fred Krueger: [whispers] I'm here.

[jumps out from behind a bush. Nancy screams and takes off running]

Rod Lane: Don't look at me like I'm some fuckin' fruitcake or something! I'm warning you!

Teacher: [during one of Nancy's classes] What is seen is not always what is real. According to Shakespeare, there was something operating in nature, perhaps inside human nature itself, that was rotten. A "canker", as he put it. Now, of course, Hamlet's response to this and to his mother's lies was to continually probe and dig. Just like the gravediggers, always trying to get beneath the surface. The same is true in a different way in Julius Caesar. John, will you go ahead, please?

John, Kid in Classroom: [John stands in front of the class and reads from his textbook] "In the most high and palmy state of Rome, a little ere the mightiest Julius fell. The grave stood tenantless and the sheeted dead did squeak and gibber in the Roman streets."

[Nancy dozes off]

John, Kid in Classroom: "As stars with trains of fire and dues of blood disaster's in the sun and the most air upon whose influence Neptune's empire stands..."

[his voice drowns out, Nancy opens her eyes to a voice out in the hallway and she looks over to see that it's Tina standing inside a bloody body bag calling her name, John's voice returns and in a more sinister tone]

John, Kid in Classroom: "Oh, God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space were it not that I have bad dreams."

Nancy Thompson: Do you believe that people can dream what's going to happen?
